I'm not the first, and I'm not the last, student to knock their wits against what might be the best known, if not the only one to stick in popular consciousness, thought experiment in the classical philosophical tradition. When I posted to FB last week that I had been accepted into the Permanent Deacon Formation program of the Diocese of Saskatoon, I was surprised at how many responses of support I received from far and wide of people I have journeyed with - wow, what a blessing of good will and affirmation. I'm very grateful to all who send their love and prayers. But lots more people have approached me with more questions about this new step in my life and in the life of the faithful in Saskatoon - not least among them, what the heep is a permanent deacon? Time to dust off and fire up the ol' blog once again... There are almost 140,000 Catholic schools around the world, serving diverse cultures and populations. For each of them, their purpose and goals would be tied to the needs of the local situation. However, there is a very clear common aim which every school which is designated as Catholic needs to put at the center of their educational program. This common aim would transcend national and cultural boundaries, even while the specific and practical ways in which it is pursued would change from school to school. The Catholic Church and its educational institutions have the unique advantage and challenge of a centralized authority which serves to discern and express the essential elements that make for unity of belief and purpose.
