Or perhaps I've crack myself open to it.
Here's what I've learned, about music, and about God.
See, each chord is actually a stack of third notes, and three degrees seems to be the basis for what constitutes a song. The Trinitarian tradition offers another tripartite which I am going to try to connect via metaphor to my new musical knowledge.
Imagine all of Creation as God's symphony.
Unfolding throughout the symphony oare movements, melodies, harmonies, systems, measures, rhythms... all combining, overlapping, supporting and conflicting with each other. Within the cosmic symphony, a certain progression comes through, over and over, in different keys, with countless variations, but always the same basic form. It is this: | |
I
He saw it was good.
He saw it was good.
He looked on what He made,
He saw it was good.IV
IV
I, I, V, I.
God so loved.
God so loved.
God so loved the world.
God so loved.
V chord creates deeper awareness of and deeper expectation of I, just as I loves and lives for its movement to V.
IV
There is a bridging chord, one which heightens and nuances the interest and colour of the variation to V. The IV chord is played by God who lives in His people, God who speaks through prophets, God who infinitely varies the finite life with beauty and aspiration, God who breathes into our nostrils and anoints our heads with fire, God who rushes unseen over the empty form of the Earth, bringing variety and fruitfulness our of chaos and disorder. God the Holy Spirit's IV chord means we ourselves are invited into the variation, we ourselves are the ventages and stops, played not against our nature as a flute against a drum or a reed into a guitar, but in tune with all our mind, will and essence, pitch perfect in a symphony of Creation that plays along with or without us, but never the same. God the Holy Spirit blows His IV chord over our cracked and flawed casing with such skill that the Beauty endures and rises into dynamic infinitude, one imperfect step of ours at a time. And IV opens up into V, the Holy Spirit opens up into Christ, which rings open in pointing back towards I, the Father.
We have received.
We have received.
We have received His same Spirit.
We have received.
